Postojna: Walk in the Rakov Škocjan Valley

Postojna, here’s what to see in the surroundings: the Rakov Škocjan Valley is a hidden and captivating spot worth a walk.

Located in the heart of a karst valley, a protected area that preserves a unique and striking landscape shaped by geological phenomena over millennia.
Here flows the Rak stream, which, through its patient work of erosion and deposition, has helped shape the entire region, creating caves, canyons, and surreal-looking rock formations.

Since 1949, this area has been protected and is a candidate to become a UNESCO World Heritage site, a designation that would reflect its extraordinary geological and environmental significance.
Currently, access is free, but the protection and conservation of the area mean that there are strict rules to follow, such as the prohibition of lighting fires and the obligation to leave no waste behind.

The trails that run through the park are well-marked, although some sections can be quite steep and slippery, especially after rainfall.
To fully enjoy your visit and explore the most scenic spots safely, it is essential to wear hiking boots.

When we visited, the weather was far from ideal: it had rained heavily, and some sections of the path were flooded, preventing us from visiting all areas. Despite this, the wild beauty of the place enchanted us.
Every view offers a new perspective on a landscape that seems to belong to another world, with mysterious caves and natural bridges carved into the rock.

HERE, you can find more information.

The Rakov Škocjan Valley is a true natural wonder, where the ancient bond between earth and water can be felt.
It is a place worth visiting, to be amazed by the power and beauty of untouched nature.
